I’ll never forget the moment I tried on my first cycling kit. I’d ordered my “unisex” (AKA men’s) gear online and couldn’t wait to try it on. But, as I stood back to look at myself in the mirror, my excitement quickly turned to horror. Instead of pro rider, I looked like a potato sack.
The cycling jersey drooped off my arms like a pair of old socks. The bib shorts lumped and bulged in all the wrong places. And the elastic at the bottom was so tight, my legs looked like Christmas hams wrapped in string.
The ride was no better, either.
I was uncomfortable, self-conscious and red raw from all that ill-fitting gear chafing in places it really shouldn’t. And that’s when I thought, “how different would cycling be if it started with women in mind, not men?”
I asked that question a lot over the next 14 years…
Every time I looked down at my sausage legs during a ride.
Every time my cycling jersey rode up to my waist.
Every time there was only a swamp green, floral cycling jersey left in my size.
And every time I spoke to other female cyclists about the lack of female-ness in the sport.
Given more and more women are cycling every year, it's still a valid question today. So, I decided to do something about it. And Muze Women was born.
Here’s to more women getting out there and enjoying the ride.
